Voice lessons are a great way to explore the instrument you carry with you wherever you go. Each voice should be celebrated for its uniqueness. Developing a strong vocal technique allows singers to perform a variety of musical styles. These foundational skills include building an awareness of the breath and understanding how the voice works.
Each lesson will include time for vocal warm ups where you will explore the vocal range and pinpoint specific areas of vocal technique to work on. Then, you will work on songs that fit your interests. This could be pop, musical theater, or classical pieces. Song work will put the skills you build in warm ups, into practice, and give you the chance to work on musicianship and storytelling. Whether you have been singing for a long time or want to try something new, singing builds confidence, teaches the importance of practice, and gives you the chance to embrace your unique instrument.
Voice teacher Emily Thompson is a former middle school choir teacher. She enjoys working with students individually to help them discover just what they are capable of as singers. She graduated from St. Olaf College in 2021 with a degree in Vocal Music Education. During her time at St. Olaf studied vocal pedagogy and began to explore teaching methods surrounding contemporary singing styles to complement her strong classical technique. She has taken voice lessons herself for over 10 years and currently sings in Minnesota Chorale and Meetinghouse Chorale as section leader. She has also served as an adjudicator for the St. Michael Albertville Solo and Ensemble contest in 2024.
